Brushing Your Teeth with Baking Soda: Is it Safe or Not?

Brushing teeth with baking soda is a common practice. A lot of people use this method with great effect. At some places, this practice is in vogue for generations. You can find households using baking soda for purposes other than for baking, cooking and cleaning tasks. In fact, this popular kitchen item is fit for cleaning teeth and as a result, is now a key ingredient in toothpaste products by some top brands in the world. Even though baking soda is popular for brushing teeth its effectiveness for total oral care is still not tested. Or, it’s not considered capable enough to fight the plaque or kill the bacteria. Similarly, it does not have fluoride to prevent the risk of cavities. Both these factors somewhat dent the utility of baking soda as an alternative to toothpaste for cleaning your teeth. Despite that, there are a lot of people who trust it and use it to brush and clean their teeth.    

Enamel damage risk

With baking soda, you are not sure how much to use. Not many people can say to know the right proportion to use. Naturally, you may either end up using it more or less, and in both the conditions, the results would not be what you desire. Worse still, it can even damage the tooth enamel and cause tooth decay if used incorrectly. This is why some people prefer toothpaste only as they are sure with a standard product by their side.  

Gum damage

You should know that baking soda has abrasive properties which is responsible for cleaning your teeth. However, anything abrasive should not be used on teeth and gum in excess else it might harm. The same happens where you use baking soda in wrong amount and get your enamel wear off or get your gums in trouble. It’s better not to use it to avoid issue to your gums.  

Not fit for people with dental work

Baking soda is not fit for those people who have undergone some kind of dental work, like, braces or retainers. It uses can weaken the glue used to hold together the work making them feel unfit after a while. What’s more, it can leave dark spots to neutralize all the good effect your braces or aligners may do. It’d be better to avoid using baking soda if you wear braces else your dental work might not pay the dividend you hope it will.

Baking soda would definitely not suit people grown on the sugary taste of paste. If sour or bad aftertaste does not repulse you, soda then can be a good option for you. Some people don’t mind mixing soda with their toothpaste to get the results and neutralize it bad taste.
