CYBERPUNK 2077: Who is V and everything else you need to know!

Silver swords are out, but cybernetic blades are very in. Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red’s final effort, took a long time. The very first teaser trailer appeared in 2013. The franchise itself, however, goes back even further to the 1980s with a pen-and-paper role-playing game by the ambitious team at R. Talsorian Games.

Here’s what you need to know about the cyberpunk universe, along with everything that has been confirmed about the next epic RPG from the veteran team behind The Witcher series.

Who is the main character?

In Cyberpunk 2077, players take on the role of a character nicknamed V. It’s not a stock avatar like in the Witcher games. Instead, players have the option to customize their appearance. You are not asked to choose a gender. Instead, they can pick and choose body types, voices, and other physical characteristics. The developers haven’t gotten the final system moving yet, but in interviews with Polygon and other outlets they claim that their intent is to allow players to create their own unique expressions of the human form. Then they will learn a variety of ways that cybernetic enhancements can change them. Expect topics like transhumanism – the belief that technology can help mankind transcend their current mental and physical form – to run through the game. The same type of fluid adjustment extends to Cyberpunk 2077 skill system. There are no traditional classes. Instead, players can add skills and perks to their character that they see fit. It is filled with enticing factors and enjoyable feats. One thing that managed to capture the attention of the players of this game was the Cyberpunk leather jacket that V wears. It’s called the Samurai Cyberpunk 2077 leather jacket and is surely a treat for all the fans!

When will Cyberpunk 2077 be released? What are the platforms?

Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be out for your entertainment on September 17th, 2020. The RPG was originally scheduled to launch on April 16, but CD Projekt RED announced in January that it “needed more time to test, fix, and polish the game.” When it launches in September, it will be available for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia.

What is cyberpunk 2077 about?

In Cyberpunk 2077 you play as V, a young cyberpunk who lives in the metropolis Night City. When creating your version of V, you can choose from three origin stories, which CD Projekt Red calls “life paths”. The Nomad Life Path sees V start in the Badlands outside of Night City. Think of this as the “rural” route. The Corpo life path seems to imply that your version of V is interested in the mega-corporations that run the city. The Street Kid life path is the exact opposite.

Welcome to the night city

Cyberpunk 2077 is located in the Northern California Free State. In particular, the action takes place in Night City, a coastal metropolis between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Night City is a fictional place, but it has a rich history of its own. It was the setting for Cyberpunk: The RPG of the Dark Future, the franchise’s original tabletop RPG product, first released in 1988. In 1990, a second edition called Cyberpunk 2020 appeared along with a detailed source book. Today it is also the backdrop for Cyberpunk Red, the official tabletop prequel of the video game by CD Projekt. It is set around 30 years before the events of Cyberpunk 2077. Everything that happened in these games is Canon, according to our information. So, if you want to go straight to the source, you can visit R. Talsorian Games and start downloading PDFs right away.

Since Night City is very large, you can hardly get from A to B without a vehicle. The advantage here is that the player has a large selection of cars and motorcycles available. Once you as the player have selected a vehicle, it will serve as your main vehicle. This vehicle can be called to your destination at any time. This means you don’t have to steal random cars on the street all the time. Players can also own multiple apartments, which gives them access to more garages to store vehicles in, much like Grand Theft Auto V.

The latest and probably most relevant lore comes from the world book included Cyberpunk Red Jumpstart Kit, released August 2019. It tells the story of a world shaped by waves of revolutionary new technology. Nations eroded by generations of persistent corporate greed, and a population, which is totally tied to cybernetics, drugs and violence, will be shaken.

By 2045, according to the timetable, the entire west coast of the United States will have more or less detached itself from the traditional democratic union we live in today. While the remnants of the federal government still retain control of parts of the east coast, the interior is more or less a wasteland. That means that the residents of Night City are on their own.

The city itself could easily have fallen many times over, but the greatest danger was in the 2020s, when a tactical nuclear device went off under mysterious circumstances. The ammunition that burst from the air was on some buildings while a huge shock wave destroyed others. But not even that could stop the lively people from recovering. According to CD Projekt, Night City will be a thriving place again by 2077.

How about multiplayer?

CD Projekt Red is known for its single player games, but Cyberpunk 2077 may have multiplayer in the future too. During Gamescom, producer Richard Borzymowski spoke about the fact that the team was thinking about a multiplayer. However, they didn’t want to reveal whether there would be a possibility of adding a multiplayer in the future.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a single player game. CD Projekt has publicly announced that it is investigating potential multiplayer applications of the combat system. Whether or not that means the studio is working on an expansion, a second game, or anything else in the world of cyberpunk is a closely guarded secret.

Who is in control?

The playable world of the video game – according to the developers, a place that is geographically smaller than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but with more narrative and gameplay density – can be divided into six districts.

The city center, with its huge skyscrapers, is your standard business area for large cities. Expect a thin veneer of aristocratic dwellings on deep underground dungeons, remnants of vaults full of ruins trapped in the near-fatal nuclear explosion. The outward pulling Watson district is the discarded shell of a once prosperous mega-corporation. It’s a mix of Asian cultures that is filled with bazaars and markets. Westbrook includes a touristy Japantown as well as the city’s richest citizens. Heywood is another affluent district, mostly Latino, but with a nascent gang problem. Pacifica serves as a slum town that is abandoned and overrun by gangs. This region was of paramount importance in the demo that was shown at E3 2019 and later at Gamescom in Germany. Finally, there is the Santo Domingo industrial sector. According to R. Talsorian Games, one of the last Night City community services is the Night City Police Department. You will remember their bitter enforcer from the Max Tac “Psycho Squad” led by the ruthless Detective J. Hammerman and featured in that first trailer from 2013. This faction also plays a significant role in the world of cyberpunk red. However, aside from this brief teaser that was released almost a decade ago, we didn’t see much of the NCPD in 2077.

Meanwhile, CD Projekt Red has brought several other powerful factions to the fore.

Militec

With the E3 2018 demo, Militec, the largest provider of military hardware in the private sector, was introduced. Their sharply dressed representatives wear three-piece suits that are wrapped in fashionable protective clothing. The faction is accompanied by heavily armed bodyguards and supported by an even more heavily armed, airborne rapid response team. This will be a source of intelligence and financial support throughout the game.

At the other end of the spectrum is the Maelstrom “Psycho Gang,” an underground group of criminals who deal in drugs and other forms of contraband. Members of the Maelstrom strongly believe in body modification. Some have completely removed the upper halves of their faces and replaced them with an articulated camera.

Animals

The animals, which were first shown during a private press screening at E3 2019, are a nomadic group that is rarely found in large concentrations in the city. They are a faction of muscle bodybuilders who are more likely to modify themselves with illegal drugs than cybernetic means. According to CD Project, you will likely see them as dedicated employees holding key positions outside of safe facilities and exotic clubs in Night City.

Netwatch

Smaller networks and databases are still commonplace, but they are all isolated from one another. Since the 2020s, most of the world’s network infrastructure has been so polluted with exotic AI and viruses that it can simply no longer be stored. Now the Netwatch is spending its time keeping the terrible things inside from coming out. Basically, Netwatch agents act like buttoned office drones that got lost on their way to a cabin farm.

Voodoo boys

Large numbers of Haitian immigrants were originally brought to Night City by mega-corporations to build the Pacifica district as cheap labor. Environmental disasters have wiped their home island off the map, while corporate disasters have turned Pacifica into a war zone. As a result, the offspring had to fight to gain a foothold in Night City.

This is a name that still goes back Cyberpunk 2020 In the 1980s, the team of R. Talsorian Games presented, if it were “a terrorist gang with ritual magic undertones”, mainly composed of whites with Caribbean-inspired influence. Years later, CD Projekt reshaped the Voodoo Boys as spiritualists whose unique form of worship involves hacking and traveling through cyberspace. They are obsessed with black leather and ultra-strong computers.

Trauma team

For those who can afford medical care in 2077, medical help comes in the form of the trauma team. This heavily armed group of first responders will arrive a moment later to pull their client’s fat out of the fire. At E3 in 2018, they were shown how to get to the top floors of a posh apartment complex by plane and urge victims of violence to throw their weapons and insurance cards at the group. CD Projekt has announced that players will be able to take on missions with this faction at some point.

How is the gameplay?

Gamers will experience Cyberpunk 2077 almost entirely from a first-person perspective. Third party views are limited to the occasional cinematic while driving, in mirrors, and on the inventory screen. The game will feature both two- and four-wheeled vehicles, including motorcycles. CD Projekt described Cyberpunk 2077 being an open world game, expect you to be able to take a break from the main questline to drive around looking for trouble.

Cover plays an essential role in Cyberpunk 2077. Demos have shown characters and enemies hiding behind desks and furniture while shots have been fired from the walls behind them. High-caliber cartridges pierce sheetrock and explosives, leaving gaping holes, making the enemies on the other side clearly visible.

High-level gunplay is an acrobatic affair. Demos have shown players slide into cover only to jump out enemies and shoot them in the back. At least one player can achieve a slow-motion effect with a bullet point while another player sees the silhouette of threats hidden behind walls. Some builds can rip open doors or pull mounted guns off their gimbals and fire them from the waist. Still other skills allow the player to hack into connected devices and turn automated systems into weapons or traps.

Melee and melee combat play a role in the game. These can also be used to climb or jump walls and stay in place over unwary enemies before they fall down to carve them up. Decapitation and dismemberment are included.

Gamers won’t be alone in Cyberpunk 2077. The E3 2018 demo featured a bilingual companion named Jackie who mixed Spanish and English with techno-futuristic slang. He was shown storming through doors to knock down enemies, deploy massive support weapons, and at one point lift a two-wheeled sedan to provide improvised protection during a boss fight.

You’ll also be seeing rocker Johnny Silverhand, played by Keanu Reeves. Johnny has been a huge part of cyberpunk history from the start – he may even have played a role in the demolition of Night City. Rumor has it in the current version of the tabletop game that its remains were on hold well into the 2040s. In Cyberpunk 2077, according to CD Projekt, he will only inhabit the player’s consciousness as a cybernetic spirit, not as a physical being.

What about cyberspace?

The Biggest Unanswered Question About Cyberpunk 2077 So, it will be to explore cyberspace known as the NET. In the tabletop game, the NET is a fantastic place where security subroutines can be presented just as easily as simple-minded receptionists or the enslavement of the spawn of hell. We’ll be sure to know more soon.

After all, that we know about the game’s plot, we are likely to spend a lot of time in this alternate world. It definitely has a lot going on that players love to explore!
