F1 sprint RESULTS: George Russell wins with Max Verstappen outside top-3 at Brazilian GP

Magnussen replaces Mazepin at Haas for 2022 season

George Russell brilliantly fought his way past Max Verstappen to take the first win of his Formula One career in Saturday’s sprint race to claim pole position for the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Russell hounded Verstappen for a number of thrilling laps at Interlagos before making his move stick between Turns 3 and 4 to triumph for Mercedes –

The 24-year-old British driver kept his composure to take the checkered flag 3.9 seconds clear of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, with Lewis Hamilton passing Verstappen on lap 20 to take third. Pole-sitter Kevin Magnussen took the checked flag in eighth.

Magnussen sprung the shock of the season when he claimed the first pole of his career in Friday night’s rain-affected qualifying. But the 30-year-old Dane’s dreams of following up his maiden pole with his first win were over on the start of lap three when Verstappen cruised past him on the run down to Turn 1.

F1 sprint race – Brazilian Grand Prix: Christian Horner…

“We felt the soft was limited in range so we started on the medium. Second half of the race it should’ve been more comfortable, but we ended up with a degradation.

“They’ve been heavily developing this car throughout the year, closer and closer, no surprise they’ve had this performance. George has done a great job there. The soft tire would’ve been better today, but we save one for the race tomorrow.

“Max reported that he hit a bit of debris. He had a touch with Carlos which was a racing incident. I’d have rather have won the race, but it sets up a fascinating grand prix tomorrow – Mercedes are going to drive a tactical race.”

F1 sprint race – Brazilian Grand Prix: Lap 22/24 – Top-3: Russell, Sainz, Hamilton

George Russell has a comfortable lead on Carlos Sainz – four seconds! – with the Ferrari complaning that his tires are going away…

Lewis Hamilton just outside the DRS range to challenge Sainz. Three laps to go though.

4-10: Verstappen, Perez, Leclerc, Norris, Magnussen, Vettel, Gasly

Perez is asking Red Bull if he can overtake the slower Verstappen, “I need the points” he says, in the battle for second in the Championship with Charles Leclerc. How will that play out?!

F1 sprint race – Brazilian Grand Prix: Lap 20/24 – Top-3: Russell, Sainz, Hamilton

Both Carlos Sainz – who makes contact with Verstappen into turn one! – and Lewis Hamilton surge past the Red Bull!

Verstappen down to fourth… his front wing is damaged due to that debris!

Meanwhile, that starting infringement will be investigated after the race. Nervy for Hamilton later on then…
