How to start a smoke free life

Smoking is one of the unhealthiest habits you can have. Not only are cigarettes bad for your lungs, but they also increase your risk of throat and mouth cancer. Aside from just taking a toll on your health, smoking can be a huge financial burden, especially when the price of cigarettes is always going up. You also always smell like cigarettes and you often need to take your smoke break outside in the cold wind or hot sun because smoking is not allowed indoors. By quitting smoking, you’re drastically improving all aspects of your life, which is why you should definitely kick the habit as soon as possible.

1. Write it down

If you have a plan on how you want to stop smoking- that’s great. Keep in mind that the plan you have won’t be nearly as effective as you want it to be if you don’t write it down. When it’s just in your mind, it’s not something you’ve put into action yet. Instead, it’s just something you’re thinking about and something very easy to forget about.

So, sit down and write down every part of the plan that you have in mind. This will make things seem more real and will help make you feel like you’re already doing something to counter your smoking habit.

2. Find your triggers

Just like any other behavior, smoking has its triggers. In other words, there are things that make you want to smoke. If you want to quit, you have to figure out what these triggers are and find ways of dealing with them in a healthier way. For example, some people start smoking because they simply don’t know what to do with their hands in social situations. Anxiety could very well be the cause of these feelings, meaning that you won’t have the need to smoke as soon as you deal with it.

Emotions are the most common triggers for cigarettes. We’ve all seen an angry or anxious person calm themselves down with a cigarette. Being in control of your emotions and expressing them in a productive way will help you get ahold of your smoking habit, too. If you’re angry, don’t reach for nicotine. How about you try jogging or working out to get the negative emotion out, instead?

3. Read a book

Self-help books about quitting smoking are available at virtually any bookstore. You can easily find the one that suits you. These books were written by experts with very interesting points and outlooks on smoking. Some of them may even change your perspective on smoking, thus making it easier to quit. If you’re not sure where to start, you can always ask a friend or the salesperson for a recommendation.

Books about quitting smoking give you clear steps on what you should do and how you should behave, making quitting a no-brainer. You’ll have a set of goals and a list to follow, which means that smoking won’t be in your near future.

4. Start vaping

Even though vaping is popular for the tricks and being cool today, it actually started as a better way to help smokers quit. Companies like Hoopers Vapour can help you with that, too. In fact, vape liquid in NZ, Australia, and other first-world countries is one of the most popular ways of quitting smoking. By choosing vaping over conventional cigarettes, you’re poisoning yourself much less. Sure, you’re still intaking nicotine, but other harmful chemicals found in cigarettes won’t be anywhere near your lungs.

Vaping also means that you’ll get to gradually quit this bad habit. Nicotine is very addictive so quitting cold turkey isn’t always effective. Instead, you should lower your intake step by step until you’re finally completely clean. Vaping helps you do that better than anything else.

5. Seek professional guidance

If you’ve tried it all but still can’t seem to stop smoking, maybe it’s time to seek professional help. Going to a therapist will help you understand why you’re addicted to nicotine and why cigarettes are such an important part of your life. This will help you change your perspective and kick the habit once and for all.

A therapist will also be able to recommend effective methods for quitting as they have more experience dealing with the issue than you do. After all, you’re not the first person to ask them for help to quit smoking and their experience will help them give you the right advice.

Conclusion

As you can see, quitting smoking doesn’t have to be impossible. This is one of the hardest bad habits to leave behind, but with strong motivation and a little support from your loved ones, you can finally have that last cigarette and mean it this time. We’re confident these tips will help you stay on the right track and that you’ll never return to this bad habit again.
