Diesel engines are on one of the lowest fuel-efficient engines, so you don’t have to spend much money on diesel-powered generators. Every building requires a generator so that it can handle the electricity capacity of whole building in case of power shut down. A diesel generator is a mobile power plant equipped with one or several electric generators driven by a diesel internal combustion engine. There are also generators present which are driven by a gasoline engine and these generators have a gasoline-electric unit or a gasoline power station and gas piston power plants. It should be noted that the terms diesel power station, diesel-electric unit, and diesel generator are not synonymous with a diesel generator or the diesel-electric unit in turn which includes a diesel generator, as well as auxiliary devices: a frame, control devices, a fuel tank.
A diesel generator has a diesel-electric unit, additionally comprising power distribution devices, automation devices, and a control panel. The diesel generators combine an alternator and an internal combustion engine, which are mounted on a steel frame, as well as an installation monitoring and control system. An internal combustion engine drives a synchronous or asynchronous electric generator.
Types of Diesel Generators:
Diesel generators differ in terms of electrical output, type of current, output voltage, and current frequency (for example, 50, 60, 400 Hz).
Also, diesel power plants are divided according to the type of cooling of a diesel engine, air or liquid. The generators with a diesel engine of liquid cooling are units of high power and size.
The Diesel Generators Also Vary as Per Their Size:
Low-power diesel power plants produce, as a rule, single-phase alternating current with a voltage of 220 V and/or three-phase voltage of 380 V. Three-phase power plants have a higher efficiency due to the higher efficiency of the alternator.
Portable diesel generators come with built-in rectifier which may have an additional DC output voltage of 12-14 volts, for example, for charging batteries. Such generators and installations are used as primary, backup or emergency sources of electricity for consumers of single or three-phase alternating current, for powering diesel locomotives, mining dump trucks, submarines and other equipment, used in small-scale power engineering, for the energy supply of shift camps, production facilities, communication installations and so on. e., as a railway power in emergency supply system of computer networks, consumers own needs for nuclear and thermal power plants and other strategic objects included in conjunction with UPS.
So, it can be concluded that the diesel generators are an important power backup option for domestic as well as industrial uses.
