Vacuum Booster – A Break Booster Widely Used Nowadays

The vacuum booster is mainly termed as the metal canister, which comprises of a diaphragm and a clever valve. The center holds a place for a road to pass-through through the canister to connect it to the piston of the master cylinder on one side and then link it up to the pedal on the other side of it. Then you have another major part of the power brakes, which is also termed as a check valve.

Searching the internet will let you come across the one-way valve, which will allow the air to be properly sucked out of the present vacuum booster. In case the engine remained switched on, or if any leak forms in the vacuum hose, the check valve ensures that air does not get to enter the vacuum booster. This part is quite important as the vacuum booster needs to be able to offer enough boost for the driver to make various stops in the event when the engine complete halts and not run. So, at this point, you don’t want to just lose brake function if you are just running out of gas on the highway.

The Brake Booster in Vacuum Servo:

You might have heard about brake booster when you are dealing with vacuum booster now. It is one enhanced form of the master based cylinder setup, designed to reduce the pedal pressure amount, and designed for brakes.

  • It helps in employing a booster set to act with the master cylinder. That provides higher hydraulic pressure to brakes. It can further be used for applying lower force on the brake pedal through the push road of the brake booster.
  • This current brake booster or the vacuum booster is mostly designed to use the vacuum from engine intake for boosting force applied by pedal onto the master cylinder. It might further employ an extra vacuum pump for enabling it.
  • Without the engine running brake, pedal starts to feel a lot harder and also ineffective on the present braking capability. Then you have the non-conventional or active booster, where the solenoid is mainly used for opening booster air valve. It then automatically push the master cylinder forward for performing some types of dynamic stability control.
  • The brake boosters mainly come in the single diaphragm or the tandem one, used solely for bigger mechanisms of trucks or other similar vehicles. Here, the vacuum booster can work as cabin breathers, where they take cleaner filtered air from the inside cabin, making it noisier.
  • It can also function as engine breathers, which are less noisy but riskier to be clogged with ice or mud if not properly protected.

Other than the added boosting set up in here, the braking mechanism is mainly that of the normal hydraulic based brake system.

The Function Test of the Booster:

Here, for checking the booster functionality of the vacuum booster, you might have to check the pedal feel and vacuum booster function. It takes place while test driving the vehicle. When the engine is off, apply the brake pedal in a repeated manner. For that, you need to apply medium pressure till the booster reserve gets depleted. For a minimum, two brake applications must have a power-assisted feel before the pedal hardens noticeably. In case, the pedal starts to feel hard and ineffective right from the go or just after one brake application, it is a symptom of vacuum leak or lower engine vacuum level.

Make sure to inspect the hose of vacuum booster for boosting up for links, cracks or any other damages. Check the vacuum at its idle stage too with vacuum gauge. For testing the function once reserve gets depleted, hold moderate pressure on the pedal and start the engine. When the booster is working properly, the pedal will drop slightly.
