What did Elon Musk study in college?

Elon Musk, the richest man on our planet and arguably the smartest innovators of our generation, is just amazing, considering that the amount of things he’s doing simultaneously are just too much for one person to handle. The man is basically a mystery, especially when it comes to the things that are running on his mind.

One of the most asked questions about Elon is what he studied when he was in college, because people across the globe look at him and treat him as an icon, which is why we’re going to answer that question for you.

Elon Musk is one of the greatest when it comes to coming up with something to tackle one problem.

At one point of his life, Elon knew that it was easy to enter the United States of America from Canada, which is why he applied for a Canadian passport through his Canadian born mother. As he was waiting for the passport to arrive, he attended the University of Pretoria for 5 months, which allowed him to avoid the mandatory in the South African military.

Elon arrived in Canada in June of 1989. He lived in the country with a second-cousin in Saskatchewan for a year. At one point, he worked at a farm and even at a lumber-mill. In 1990, Musk entered the Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Two years after that, he went to the University of Pennsylvania, where he got his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics in 1997.

The thing is, he never stopped there.

In the year 1994, Musk managed to land 2 internships in the Silicon Valley. One internship was at an energy storage startup named Pinnacle Research Institute, which studied electrolytic ultracapacitors for energy storage, and the second one was at the Palo ALto-based startup Rocket Science games. A year after that, he was accepted for a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program in materials science at Stanford University in California. Just after two days, he dropped out of Sanford and decided to join the Internet Boom, which was a stock market bubble caused by excessive speculation of Internet-related companies in the late 1990s.

The rest is history.

Elon Musk At The University Of Pennsylvania

Musk went to the University of Pennsylvania in 1992 and got his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics in 1997. During his stay at the University of Pennsylvania, he opened up an unofficial nightclub, which allowed him to earn thousands of dollars. All he did was figure out what the students at the university wanted.

Elon Musk Companies

Elon Musk was once a kid just like most of us and he had something different in mind.

During an interview with Elon Musk, he said that he had 2 favorite subjects in high-school and in both subjects,  he performed really amazingly.

During the Third Row Tesla podcast, which was released in February of this year, he said:

When I was in high school … I got distinctions in two areas: physics and computer science,” Musk said on the. Those were my two best subjects.

Elon said that he thought he would be doing physics at a particle accelerator as an adult and he was pretty sure about it.

He added:

I thought, ‘OK, I want to figure out what’s the nature of the universe,’ so, [I would] go try working with people banging particles together and see what happens.

However, when Elon was around 22, all his plans changed.

In 1993, he said:

But in 1993, when Musk was about 22 years old, his plans changed.

He explained:

Things went along until the Superconducting Semi Collider got cancelled in the U.S.

The Superconducting Semi Collider was the largest particle accelerator project at the time and it was shut down after the government funding was pulled.

Recalling it, Elon said:

[I was] like, ‘Woah.’ What if I’m working at a collider, spend all these years, and then the government just cancels it? So that was like, ‘I’m not going to do that.’

At the time, Elon was a student at the University of Pennsylvania studying Physics and Economics.

After graduating, Elon used his computer skills and found a city guide software company called Zip2. In 1999, Elon Musk sold Zip2 to Compaq for around $300 million. Elon then used the money to found X.com, which was an online financial services platform, which later became Paypal.

Elon said in the podcast that he knew he could do better than these internet start-ups.

He added in the podcast:

When I was a kid, I had this existential crisis. I was about 12 years old or something and I was like, ‘Well what does the world mean? What’s it all about? Do we live in some meaningless existence?’ And I was like ‘OK, we don’t really know what the answer is obviously, but the universe is the answer’.

3 years after selling Zip2, Elon founded SpaceX, an aerospace company, in 2002.

At that point, he knew that he wanted to do something for everyone on our planet.

Elon said that “we must propagate” a human civilization on Earth as far into the future as possible and become a multi-planet species. He also knew he wanted to colonize Mars in the future.

Fast forward to recent times, SpaceX is the biggest aerospace company on our planet and it has successfully launched two NASA astronauts into orbit for the first time.
