How Are IAS Officers Recruited?
The officers are recruited through the civil services examination, which is considered as one of the toughest competitive exams in the world. The Union Public Service Commission is the agency that is responsible for conducting such exams. According to official data, around 1 million students apply for the IAS exam with hopes of becoming IAS officers, however, only 0.2 percent of the students manage to pass the exam.

Shortage of IAS Officers in India
In 2017, the government of India reported that there is a shortage of around 1,700 IAS officers in the country. However, despite the shortage, the Indian government made it clear that they are not going to increase the annual recruitment of IAS officers to avoid affecting the career progression of existing officers and the overall structure of the service.
