How Are IAS Officers Recruited? 

The officers are recruited through the civil services examination, which is considered as one of the toughest competitive exams in the world. The Union Public Service Commission is the agency that is responsible for conducting such exams. According to official data, around 1 million students apply for the IAS exam with hopes of becoming IAS officers, however, only 0.2 percent of the students manage to pass the exam.

The Responsibilities of an IAS officer

Here are the three main responsibilities of an IAS officer:

1. IAS officers are responsible for collecting revenue and function as court officials in matters of revenue and crime. They are also responsible for maintaining law and order in the area that they are assigned in, they are responsible for implementing union and state government policies, and they are the acting agent of the government in the field to act as an intermediary between the public and the government.
2. IAS officers are responsible to handle administration and daily proceedings of the government, which includes the formulation and implementation of policy in consultation with the minister-in-charge of a specific ministry or department.
3. IAS officers are responsible to contribute to policy formulation and to make a final decision in certain matters with the agreement of the minister or the council ministers.

Shortage of IAS Officers in India

In 2017, the government of India reported that there is a shortage of around 1,700 IAS officers in the country. However, despite the shortage, the Indian government made it clear that they are not going to increase the annual recruitment of IAS officers to avoid affecting the career progression of existing officers and the overall structure of the service.
