How to Prepare Your Yard for Warmer Weather

If you love being outside during the warmer spring and summer months, it makes sense to invest time in preparing your outdoor space for the quality time you will be spending out there. Whether you have a beautifully landscaped yard or a small yard with a patio or deck, there are a few things you can do to prepare your outdoor space as the temps increase.

As you gear up for spring, think about where you spend your time outdoors and what your family enjoys doing outside. If you have kids, some of your lawn prep may involve setting up a swingset or other outdoor toys. If you love gardening, some of your preparation may be installing raised garden beds. Keep all of this in mind as you consider these tips on how to prepare your yard for warmer weather:

Do Any Maintenance

As you get ready for warmer days, begin to do any regular maintenance on your yard. Regular maintenance may include clearing any leaves or debris from your lawn and moving any large sticks or other items from areas where they don’t belong.

At this point, you may also want to inspect your outdoor areas for any non-routine maintenance. For example, over the winter, you may have noticed deck boards that need to be replaced. As the days get even warmer, you may begin such maintenance as aerating your lawn to prepare for fertilizer.

Prepare the Lawn Area and Landscaping

After any routine maintenance is done, prepare your lawn area according to how you will use the area. If you like to keep just grass or minimal landscaping, plan accordinging and purchase any necessary fertilizer. Make sure your lawnmower is in working order and has fuel.

If you have speciality landscaping, make sure you are prepared with any tools that you need. If you are a gardener, prepare your garden bed by turning the soil and possibly adding compost. If you have kids, set up their outdoor toys, swing sets, etc. Make sure that your yard is set up how your family will enjoy it during the summer months.

Prepare the Entertainment Area

Chances are, you probably have an outdoor area for entertainment, such as a patio or deck, so be sure to give this area some love during your preparation and not just your yard. Make sure any outdoor furniture is set up and in good condition. Be sure to have an umbrella or some other means of shade if necessary.

If you cook outdoors and have a propane grill, or you have a propane heater or outdoor propane fireplace, be sure to check your small propane tanks and take them to be refilled, or arrange for a propane delivery. Finally, add any finishing touches, such as fairy light or decorate outdoor pillows to your space.

Since people spend so much time outdoors once it starts warming up, it makes sense to take the time to prepare our outdoor spaces and lawns in the spring. Be sure to do maintenance, prepare your lawn, and prepare your outdoor entertaining areas as the weather gets warmer.
